Madonna and the Conspiracy of the Universe

You’ve probably heard Madonna mention the Law of Attraction and say many times that if you want something badly enough, the Universe conspires for you to get it. She says this in many different ways, though in the end they all mean the same thing.

In fact, the phrase is taken out of the book The Alchemist (see my opinion of the book in the link). But the concept is quite old. I’d say it’s as old as humanity. In essence, there isn’t much difference between the Law of Attraction and a bunch of people dancing around a fire to make it rain or another bunch of people sacrificing some chaste maiden to the gods with who knows what intentions. If you think about it, it’s not that different either from self-flagellation or the acceptance of Marian (virgin Mary) apparitions.

Madonna means something else, I hope

If there is one thing over which I don’t agree with Madonna, is this one. In fact, I am quite baffled by the fact that Madonna postulates this kind of stuff. Not baffled. I am totally perplexed.

It amazes me to such an extent that I refuse to accept it.

I have analysed and thought about it and after a while I have come to the conclusion that it is not actually that she thinks that all that crap has any basis or meaning.

What she does is to wrap a much complex subject simply, so that the message comes across quicker, easier to listen to and nobody bothers her asking questions about it.

It pisses me off when she says things like that. As if what she has achieved was down to “the universe” and wanting it so badly instead of working her ass off.

It doesn’t matter how much you wish for something, if you don’t open up to the possibilities and work hard for it, you’re not gonna get it.

Do you really think that Madonna has wished her way to success?

I don’t. And I don’t think she does either.

I am convinced that this wishful thinking stuff is just a figure of speech, a much shorter way of saying that when you want something bad you must use all means at your disposal to get it. And that means that you must work you ass off, and have a plan, and follow it until the end, no matter what. If you fall, you get up again, over and over. Pun intended.

It’s no good to want something and wait at home wishing for it badly. Wishful thinking doesn’t work.

Don’t get me wrong. I respect everyone’s beliefs.

If you choose to believe that just by wishing something very much you’re gonna get it, and it works for you, that’s fine by me. If you choose to believe that if you pray to god that something will or won’t happen, and it works for you, that’s fine by me. Whatever works for each one of us is fine.

Everybody has to believe in something. I just wonder why, instead of believing in supreme beings or cosmic forces, we don’t believe a little bit more in ourselves.
